What happens when an already scared group of people are suddenly cast into utter darkness? They panic.

Screams poured out from everywhere at once, all around us—high-pitched, panicked, and terrified cries. I heard the unmistakable sounds of flesh pounding on flesh, like bodies crashing into one another as they scrambled around blindly.

I felt big, strong hands grab my middle, and the next thing I knew, I was crushed up against a rigid body. I didn’t need light to tell me who this was, the musky scent and solid arms familiar. I couldn’t help but let myself mold into him. His hot breath caressed my neck, sending tiny thrills inside my belly. I’ll admit, it was really nice to have someone want to protect me. Especially when that someone was stupid hot, stupid strong, stupid kind, and all mine.

Having Marcus shield me from this enemy was fine, but I had a town of freaked-out paranormals to think about.

If I knew of a spell to create light, I would have done so by now. The only one I knew, the one I’d practiced with, I’d done it with snow. All the snow had melted in Maine.

Over the screaming, I heard my aunts’ voices murmuring at the same time, and then three globes of light blinked into view and soared up into the sky, illuminating the area like three massive spotlights. Witch orbs—magical spheres that gave off a soft, white light.

Yeah, my aunts were cool.

Dolores raised her arms, her lips moving in a chant, and then two of the witch orbs zoomed behind us, one going east and the other west until they both disappeared, swallowed by the darkness.

Reluctantly, I moved away from Marcus’s protective hold, wanting to do something and feeling the sudden rush of cold where his hard body had been a moment ago.

“Everyone, calm down,” soothed Dolores as she approached the frenzied crowd of paranormals, though anyone who knew her could see the amount of tension in her posture. “Please. Go back to your homes. Lock your doors. It’s the safest place for you now. I promise we will find a solution.”

“But we’re in the dark,” cried a female with a ponytail, a toddler wrapped around her leg.

“Grab all the candles you can find,” continued Dolores. “My sisters and I will procure more witch orbs to give the town enough light to be manageable.”

“Won’t be enough,” mumbled Ronin, who I knew could see in the dark. I caught Iris’s eyes, and she gave me a worried look.

“Please, go back to your homes,” said Ruth. “Please. Go home.”

“But what about these wizards?” shouted a male. “You said they did this. They’ve already killed four of us. How are we supposed to defend ourselves if we can’t see them coming?”

He had a point.

“We’ll figure this out,” called Dolores. “There’s no point in panicking. It’ll just make things worse. Go home and lock your doors.”

“And what?” shouted someone else.

“We can’t get out or call for help!” cried another voice that belonged to a big, muscular male with a ponytail, who I recognized as one of the parents of the dead werewolf teen.
